The Third Servant by Michael Billington

In the famous parable in the Gospel of Matthew we are told that a man once gave each of his three servants an amount of money just before he went away on a trip. When he returned two of the servants had doubled the amount they had been given and, thereby, enriched their master. The third servant, however, had been too frightened to invest the money he had been given and thus did not enrich his master. For that, Matthew tells us, he was cast into the night. Matthew never tells us, however, what happened next. I chose to make the third servant a teenage boy and sent him on a 20-plus year journey throughout the ancient world. He lives for a time on the steppes of what is now Russia, travels to India then along the ancient spice trail to Egypt. Eventually he goes to Rome where, one day, he hears of a prophet named Jesus.
This novel has reminded some readers of "Ben Hur" in that it combines adventure with a tale of lost faith and redemption complete with interesting characters both real and fictional.

Notes from Author~

I was a journalist for nearly 50 years and in that time I was fortunate enough to cover some of the major news events of that time period. Among them: The 9/11 crash of a jetliner near Shanksville, Pa.; the Rwandan civil war; the invasion of Panama; Operation Desert Storm; Hurricanes Andrew, Hugo, Gilbert, Katrina and Rita; the Love Canal environmental disaster and the collapse of the savings and loan industry. I received more than 40 awards during my career for investigative reporting, column writing, deadline news writing and feature writing as well as one for editorial cartooning. I served two tours in Vietnam: The first as a rifleman in the U.S. 9th Infantry Division and the second as an adviser to the Vietnamese 46th Infantry Regiment. My awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star (2) and a Purple Heart. I was also decorated twice by the Vietnamese government. I retired from journalism in 2012 and have been writing novels since then. I have seven novels on Kindle with two more in progress. I currently live in Spain
